Season 1 Background Buildings

My second biggest milestone after the background characters

I feel this puts me overall past the half way point with the concept art. These milestones are really important to keeping motivation throughout the boring parts.

Anyway until Next time,

January 16th Update

First of a new set of Buildings this week, this will take a little explanation:

These are the smallest Structures in the entertainment district which is a recreational area, sort of for soldiers to unwind in, and to distract from some of the shadier things the Human government do, its basically a permanent carnival, so these little stalls line the streets.

The dolls in the prize stand are a fun detail for me too:

Ok, so the left most one is The Masked Man, this one is a artistic choice, I want to give the feel that he could be watching from anywhere, or could be anyone, so I want to place his mask or an image of him in every episode, this will count for the episode the group are in the Entertainment district, he’ll be making little cameos a lot more when I move onto the interior concepts.

The Second is obviously Ruby from RWBY, I want to wear this show’s core inspiration on its sleeve so I decided to add her in as an Easter egg.

The last is a character called Zephir from the comic called Defenders of Santropia my friend freshmaiden is making I love her stuff and since her work has also been an inspiration I wanted to put in a reference to her characters in there too (I’ve also decided that her comic will be a work of fiction in Fade’s world too, so expect to see more of them)

Anyway that’s it for the analysis, here is this week’s Update list:

  • Character Concepts

May 14th Update

Last of the store concepts, I aimed for some high-rise superstores:

I had a lot of fun working out the shape of this one, I actually got the idea from the bridge of the Star destroyers in star wars but switched some of the proportions and elements around to make it a bit more original:

One thing I am worried about is that proportion wise I may have made it too big in comparison to the previous two store concepts. I want for each area to have and small, medium and large building type, with the exceptions of high-rise areas like the business district, so the city can have an interesting skyline. I’m also a little worried that the signs for these buildings aren’t enough to vary the buildings from each other, but I’m hoping that because they’re just background buildings that it won’t be that obvious

Anyway, for this week the list is as follows:

  • Character Concepts
    • Background extras:42/42
    • Main Characters: 13/13
    • Main character re-designs: 5/5
    • Secondary Character: 14/14
    • Secondary Character re-designs: 5/5
  • Weapon Concepts
    • Main Characters: 12/12
    • Secondary Characters: 7/7
    • Weapon Redesigns: 4/4
  • Scene Concepts
    • Interiors: 0/24
    • Landmarks:0/15
    • Exteriors: 3/39

That’s all for this week,
Until next time

May 7th Update

Second week of building concepts, I’m starting to find a flow with the designs:

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Like last week’s concepts I’m working off of a similar colour palette to Twilight town for this section of the city, but I’ve been experimenting with more complex shapes,  I really like this one, but I need to work on my basic perspective with geometric shapes, the windows in the top section look very off, that being said I think I got the basic idea of this building, enough to accurately recreated it in 3D which is the most important part.

Anyway, for this week the list is as follows:

  • Character Concepts
    • Background extras:42/42
    • Main Characters: 13/13
    • Main character re-designs: 5/5
    • Secondary Character: 14/14
    • Secondary Character re-designs: 5/5
  • Weapon Concepts
    • Main Characters: 12/12
    • Secondary Characters: 7/7
    • Weapon Redesigns: 4/4
  • Scene Concepts
    • Interiors: 0/24
    • Landmarks:0/15
    • Exteriors: 2/39

That’s all for this week,
Until next time

April 30th Update

Ok, first of the building concepts, the first of three Stores:

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

I decided for the first few buildings I was going to keep it simple until I have a bit more practice, but just getting to this point was actually quite tough, I started off making silhouettes, but the lack of detail from it made it difficult to progress designs, then I tried doing quick thumbnail sketches, but that only really worked for larger buildings:

StoreThumbnails1.png Some of these I do really like, so you might be seeing more detailed versions of some of these.
Finally I was given the suggestion to try working with an emotion of the scene these buildings where in, which I had a really clear idea of, and just worked by applying colour to the basic shapes and I was happy with the result.

Over all while I am going to miss character concepting  I am looking forward to practising this type of design and getting better at it.

Anyway, for this week the list is as follows:

  • Character Concepts
    • Background extras:42/42
    • Main Characters: 13/13
    • Main character re-designs: 5/5
    • Secondary Character: 14/14
    • Secondary Character re-designs: 5/5
  • Weapon Concepts
    • Main Characters: 12/12
    • Secondary Characters: 7/7
    • Weapon Redesigns: 4/4
  • Scene Concepts
    • Interiors: 0/24
    • Landmarks:0/15
    • Exteriors: 1/39

That’s all for this week,
