June 18th Update

Only a handful of landmarks left now, this week is the Villain’s base:

The Group hides out in the warehouse district, so I used the colours from those concepts, but then used some of the logos on the blindfold code followers as graffiti to make it stand out a bit more, while still keeping it discrete enough to be a useful hideout. I plan on adding more detail to little things like the boards covering the windows when I’m making the 3d models, but overall I’m happy with it.

Season 1 Background Buildings

My second biggest milestone after the background characters

I feel this puts me overall past the half way point with the concept art. These milestones are really important to keeping motivation throughout the boring parts.

March 5th Update

Woo! I did it, all of the background city buildings for season 1 are done!

This fits into more of an office/admin styled building, I’m also going to use one as the station for the city monorail, I wanted to give it a very simple prefabricated look, similar to the modular pre-fab offices I found online.

And with that the two biggest concept jobs for the current season is done, this with the background character designs where the two jobs I was the most daunted by, Next will be landmarks and the interior rooms, which I suspect will take longer than a week per room because of the level of detail each room needs, but I will post progress images when I get to them.

For now the next big done is the Landmarks which should still fit the one per week formula I’ve been following.

That being said next week I’ll be posting a full catalogue of the buildings I’ve done like what I did with the background extras since I’ll be attending Dublin comic con and won’t have time to work.

February 26th Update

Only one background concept before we start getting to the interesting stuff:

Like last week I’m sticking with the variation in colour, but where last week was getting resources out of the ground now it has to be sorted before it can be sent off to the factory district, which is what these building are for. Mana would be dumped on the longer ramp, inside it would be sorted, then grouped together and sent through to the smaller ramp into a waiting truck below.
The inspiration for these was the old coal mines of America:

I purposely kept it simpler than this image to give it a more clinical look.

September 18th Update

The Final Factory this week, took a little bit of a different approach this week:

the Storage Tanks were something I think the district really needed, both from a world-building perspective and a way of adding variety to the scenes, I’m quite happy with them.
I think I’ve finally perfected drawing cylinders enough to move onto some of the more advanced Alther kin buildings, which I’m really looking forward to working on now

In other news, I have to apologise for the lateness of this update, I’m back to college this week and things are unfortunately up in the air with my scheduled, there may be another delay next week as well, but after that things should start getting back to normal with the updates.

August 6th Update

Last of the warehouses today, honestly I’m pretty happy with these ones:

This was the kind of warehouse that’s going to be populating a large portion of the warehouse district, I’ve always loved the look of run down buildings like this one, which quite a few good references exist for:

I really feel like I was starting to enjoy designing these buildings, and I do wish I could make more, but I have to move on

July 30th Update

The second warehouse concept this week, and we’re going for a little bit less pristine a building:

I just want to point out before going into detail, that the “Death to Rwby” graffiti is just a friendly jab, I genuinely love the show, and all the graffiti is are Easter eggs for it, but in this case there is a lot of people critical of the show, and that’s just a nod to that.

The design itself I’m not fully happy with, I wanted the panels on it to look more like armoured plates, since this city is prepared for war at all times, but they came out looking like windows, that being said the buildings themselves aren’t meant to be noticed so I don’t think its a huge issue, I was largely inspired by the design of this Warehouse:

I think the issue comes from the fact I tried to scale down the design for a smaller building, so I had less to work with, which I’m going to take into account for next week’s design.

July 23rd Update

First building of the warehouse District, where the villians of season one hide out:

While the length of this building is a little too short I’m really happy with the simplicity of this design, I’m planning on having a few warehoused in various states of upkeep for this section, but I decided to start with the newest, cleanest ones first, since I had a lot of non-Fade related things to get done.
