July 30th Update

The second warehouse concept this week, and we’re going for a little bit less pristine a building:

I just want to point out before going into detail, that the “Death to Rwby” graffiti is just a friendly jab, I genuinely love the show, and all the graffiti is are Easter eggs for it, but in this case there is a lot of people critical of the show, and that’s just a nod to that.

if you want a better look at each one here they are:

The design itself I’m not fully happy with, I wanted the panels on it to look more like armoured plates, since this city is prepared for war at all times, but they came out looking like windows, that being said the buildings themselves aren’t meant to be noticed so I don’t think its a huge issue, I was largely inspired by the design of this Warehouse:

Chapparal Electric

I think the issue comes from the fact I tried to scale down the design for a smaller building, so I had less to work with, which I’m going to take into account for next week’s design.

Anyway, here is this week’s list:

  • Character Concepts
    • Background extras:42/42
    • Main Characters: 13/13

July 16th Update

Last Human Residential building this week, honestly I’m glad to be done with these buildings and moving onto some new ones:

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

I thought it might be a good idea to vary the skyline of this section of the city by adding not just single family residences but Apartment buildings as well, it is a city after all, plus while unintentional I like how this took on a bunker like look while still matching the previous two buildings.
The building itself is inspired by these two buildings I found on Google:

The key thing I noticed was the balconies on both, so that was the main focus of this building.

The next thing I want to talk about is a bit more abstract, but its been on my mind lately and I feel its important to talk about, I’ve been feeling my motivation for the project waning lately, this doesn’t mean I’m quitting, far from it. I regularly get these blocks of creativity, and I consider myself quite good at getting over them but this one has been particularly bad, which prompted me writing this as a means of both helping anyone that stumbles across it, and a means of visualising the problem.
Now one of the first things I’ll say to anyone suffering from it is that Motivation is a lot like the tide, it comes and goes, so a lot of what I do is wait it out, this leads to a lot of procrastination on my part, which many people believe is laziness, but I see as an essential part of my creative process, which I have found out recently that science is backing me up on that, but its important to identify the differences between productive procrastination and good old fashioned laziness.

I spend a lot of time looking for inspiration, reading looking up references, watching shows similar to Fade, namely Anime and action cartoons, checking out youtube video tutorials and so on, always with Photoshop or a google document open for when I get ideas.

This recent Block has gone through stages, the first one is mental fatigue, I feel tired even though I might be fully rested, I’ll still be drawing or writing, but its tougher than usual, and I usual don’t realise I’m blocked because I’m still creating, the next stage is full on blockage, I don’t want to work and nothing creative is happening in my head, usually for me this lasts a day or two, but this time its lasted about a week. The Third stage I call the incubation stage, I’m motivated but nothing is really clicking, this is easily the most frustrating stage (which is more or less where I’ve been the last few days).
The Fourth and final stage is opening the floodgates where the good ideas have finally come, unfortunately this is the most difficult stage for me to predict, because unlike the others, this stage can interrupt any of the previous stages, or drag out the last stage, which the key is setting myself up to be ready for that floodgate moment.

If anyone reading is suffering from a creative block in anything, be patient, it will pass and some of your best work will come from it. While its far from comprehensive, I hope this helps.

Anyway, the progress list is as follows:

  • Character Concepts
    • Background extras:42/42
    • Main Characters: 13/13
    • Main character re-designs: 5/5
    • Secondary Character: 14/14
    • Secondary Character re-designs: 5/5
  • Weapon Concepts
    • Main Characters: 12/12
    • Secondary Characters: 7/7
    • Weapon Redesigns: 4/4
  • Scene Concepts
    • Interiors: 0/24
    • Landmarks:0/15
    • Exteriors:12/39

That’s all for this week,

December 11th Update

Last of our heroes weapons this week, with Ash’s:
WolfFangs.png

Ok, so there were a lot of influences that I’ll try get in order here. I knew righ away that I wanted Ash’s weapons to follow the Rwby logic of having a melee weapon with a long rang attack, but I knew I also didn’t want it to transform,  so I looked to other works that would inspire me.

The first two designs are mixes of weapons from the video game Warframe, which I have a pretty big addiction to, plus I feel it does its world building in really cool subtle ways so a lot of plot elements for Fade will be taking hints from it.
The weapons themselves I tried to mash together as a sort of Warframe Rwby mix:

I really Love the fine line between organic and technological these designs walk.

The third design was based on real life weapons, but I felt it looked a bit too bland and impractical:

The two weapons just didn’t look like they belonged together. One was purely functional and the other was finely crafted and decorated, and as a result the functional one took away some of the beauty of the crafted one, and the crafted one made the design seem impractical. So its my least favored design.

The final bottom design I’ll say is my favorite, its partially inspired by Squall’s gunblade from Final fantasy VIII:

I always felt this weapon got a lot of bad press from fans, I do agree that its impractical, but in terms of design its only a few tweaks from being a really cool concept. Basically I took the idea of the gunblade turned it into a tonfa, and made it so the bullet fires along a small groove in the blade, although that detail is a little hard to see in my design due to WordPress shrinking my images.

Even though I’m planning on using design four, I do like some of the others, and may use them for other characters or as ceremonial upgrades, either way you’ll probably see them again.

That’s all on Ash’s concepts, next week we get to the Blindfold Code’s weapons!

Anyway, here is this week’s progress:

  • Character Concepts
    • Background extras:42/42
    • Main Characters: 13/13
    • Main character re-designs: 5/5
    • Secondary Character: 14/14
    • Secondary Character re-designs: 5/5
  • Weapon Concepts
    • Main Characters: 4/12
    • Secondary Characters: 0/7
  • Scene Concepts
    • Interiors: 0/24
    • Exteriors: 0/20

That’s all for this week,
Until next time

May 1st Update

Another business woman this week:

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

I realised as I was thinking about this design that all the women I have as business times all half skirts, so I decided to give at least one pants and this is the result.

Only 12 background character concepts left to do, honestly I’m getting really excited to start working on the main character revisions and get the designs of the characters I haven’t drawn yet done. After that I’m hoping to get a few environment concepts, which honestly I’m not totally sure how to attempt, I have a few ideas, but landscape drawing is very time consuming, not to mention that I have some key buildings that I want to set aside time to design, but that’s something I’ll work out when I get to it, right now I’m happy to be close to reaching this objective. When their all done I’ll place them into a separate slideshow so the can all be viewed in the one place.

Anyway, that’s all for this week, until then

April 18th Update

Argh! I’m a bit behind this week with the background character this week, Back to the business types for a while:

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

I looked over some of the earlier Business men and women I roughed out before, and decided I wanted Human business people to look a little more casual, so there are going to be more open jackets and rolled up sleeves in these designed than the Otherkin ones I started with. I’m not sure I’m Ok with the hair I designed for this particular one, particularly the division along the side, but I’m going to give myself a bit of time to process it.

Other than that not much else to report, things have been a lot more hectic than I’ve expected over the Easter, but I am hoping to have myself a bit more organised this week.

Till then,

January 9th Update

This week I move onto my next batch of extra’s shopkeepers:

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The overall design is slightly based off of Yoshiki Aoi from Horizon in the middle of nowhere:

tensyu0

I actually don’t know much about the character, but I love the head cloth which gives her a real hard working feel. The Colour schemes I based off of the shopkeeper from Rwby and Kisuke Urahara from bleach:

The Last Colour scheme I actually took from a non-shop keeper source: The misadventures of Tron Bonne, it was basically me trying to recreated the rough look of the stylish colour scheme (which is actually very difficult to find images of online)
umvc3tronblack

In other news I’ve completed a line count of the story and figured out exact amount of voice work I’ll need, which in turn will let me know roughly how much animation I’ll need to do per episode. As it stands the main four characters have about 35 to 40 lines per episode on average and in total I have 2771 lines of dialogue for the whole season, now that probably seems like a lot but I included a lot of one-word lines and split any monologues into a few lines. But now that this is done I can tell any voice actors exactly how much I need them to do! And while I don’t have time to have auditions right now with college, I plan on jumping into it head first when summer comes around. That being said there are one or two people I’ve scouted out and taken note of for voices and will be contacting to play certain roles and will probably continue to do so over the next few months. All in all, it’s exciting stuff to me.

Until next week
