November 21st Update

Last Character concept for now, a redesign of Mayor Grey:

Its a very minor change to this design, but I prefer it, it looks a little more interesting than the old design, which I feel looked a little too bland:

And with that, I’m done with the character concepts, I would like to re-draw a few, there are one or two minor supporting characters, and there a handful of scene specific background characters, but these can wait until after my next two milestones.

Speaking of which, what comes next? Well now that I have the characters, I need a world with objects for them to interact with, which is a bigger hurdle than it sounds. There are two important milestones I need to complete, First I want to design weapons for the main characters, second I want to design buildings for the city, The buildings are the bigger job, and I don’t want to jump straight into another year long milestone right after finishing one, so I’m going to focus on designing weapons for the next few weeks, so I’m adding some new categories to the end of Update list:

November 13th Update

Second last redesign, this week its Kusanagi Tsurugi:

Once again there wasn’t a lot I wanted to change with this design, but I wasn’t happy with the lizard like look of the old face and the reverse wings I was experimenting with:

I also wanted to make him look more intimidating, and I noticed I forgot to draw a finger on his right hand, which gave me the idea to give him some scars, which will make a lot of sense since he is essentially a veteran from a losing army.

With that I only have one more redesign to do, which will leave the character design milestone done! Now this doesn’t mean I won’t be completely done with making character, there will be some scene specific characters and background extras I’ll need to do, but I wouldn’t consider them as high a priority as the building and weapon concepts that will need to be done.

November 5th Update

This week’s redesign is Sho:

This was a tough one to design, because it required removing a lot of details from a design I loved, but that didn’t match the human military style I was going for:

Like the others I based the new design off of the uniforms of the other human Military:

But to keep him unique I decided to veer away from the usual cream colour, however I didn’t want to use the old colour scheme of Sho’s earlier design, since it makes him look a lot like a villain which wasn’t the intention of the character, hes a supporter rather than an antagonist, so I used the blue Human military background character as a start and then took the darker aspects of his old design as highlights rather than the main focus colour.

October 30th Update

Last Update of October, and this week its a redesign of Haru:

I was a little strapped for time this week, so rather than fumble around with the face, I found a reference image that matched the angle and traced it, the final result went a little too realistic for my liking, but it gets the idea of the character across.
The design itself I’m really happy with, I simplified the design down a lot while keeping her looking offical:

A lot of this was done by matching her uniform to the other Human Military designs I’ve made:

This lets her look like she fits with the more Western feel of the Human Military, and by keeping the red from her old design it helps her stand out and retain her individuality.

October 8th Update

Another Redesign this week, Pamu:

Most of the design is  largely the same as the original, since I was pretty happy with it, but I decided to simplify the colour scheme:

This was mainly because of the changes I made to Anguis last week, so to give her more identity when next to Anguis, I decided to take the brighter elements of her scheme and make them more of a focus.

October 1st Update

Another redesign this week, Anguis from the Blind fold code:

I was happy with the majority of his original design, like his hoodie and hair, but there were a few elements that I had to change. First, his original colour scheme was a bit too bright and hard on the eyes:

So I muted the neon cyan of the t-shirt and had it match the blue of Pamu’s Hoodie:

Since Pamu has the darker colour scheme overall I think I’ll brighten up the blue sections of her hoodie when I get to her redesign. Secondly I didn’t like the short sleeved hoodie, so I took the stitched pants Idea from last week and applied it to the sleeves.

A really unexpected consequence of these redesigns is I’m able to see how far I’ve improved since I started the concepts, i’m half tempted to redraw all of the main cast, but I don’t think I’ll be able to find time, especially since there is still so much I still have to get on paper, so for now they’ll have to wait.

September 26th update

A little late with this one, but I’m glad I took a little extra time with it, this week is the start of my Character re-designs starting with Kigyo:

I’m really happy with how this turned out, its a big improvement over the old design, which looked a far too much like the character he was inspired by, also Kigyo is the Blindfold’s tank, so he should look burlier and more of a brawler. There were a couple of elements I did want to keep though, like the hexagon design and the hood made of strips of cloth, but the rest I took from stock images of Punks and ravers. Overall I think this sets a good precedent for the rest of the redesigns.

September 17th Update

Last secondary character concept! The villain of season 2, who will be making a cameo, Goro Susanoo:

There where actually a few different inspirations for this character, but he’s largely meant as a darker version of Commander Izanagi  but he has elements from admiral Thrawn from Star Wars, Azien from bleach and Liquid Snake from Metal gear Solid:

I have so much fun making villains Goro in particular, he’s a mastermind type character, and I think I nailed that feel in his appearance, but it went through a few tweeks:

At first I felt I should keep him in just the human military uniform, but I wanted to make it clearer he is a villain, so I added the coat, I’m actually still debating giving him the brown coat above or going for the greyer coat, but I may have him switch between the two, so we’ll see in the future.

September 11th Update

Second last Secondary Character, the long suffering Mayor of Spectrum City, Mayor Grey:

Honestly, this character was a nightmare to design, and I’m still not happy with him. It’s really irritating since this has been the first character that I’ve hit a really roadblock with since starting my concepts, his aim is to be a pathetic cowardly character, but he still lacks any kind of appeal. I partially based him off Gil from the Simpsons, since the both have that same kind of personality:

I might have to add him to my re-designs, but I’ve been brain storming him for two weeks now and frankly I’m sick of working on the character at this point. On a brighter note I only have one secondary character left now, and thankfully its one that I’m really excited to design!

September 3rd Update

Another character that will be important in later seasons, Queen Ocher

She’s connected to one of the other main characters and I have a lot of fun designing her, although she looks younger than I intended her to look, but the actual costume I’m really happy with. I was going to a mature and elegant look, that was modeled off the idea of a queen bee.

I was also hoping to get another concept done this week so I’d only have one more to do, but a few unexpected things came up this week, but I’ll have the other done by next week.
