March 25th Update

This was a tricky one to figure out, so many lines:

SpireIndrustiesTower.png

Figuring out how to draw this building was the biggest obstacle, as good as I’ve gotten with perspective, this has several grids warping, so in the end I used a 3D model again, but used the wire frame of the model for the windows.

I had a really clear idea of this building, its for the Human business district, I wanted to find a different way to make this one stand out without messing with the colour scheme like I did with last weeks concept. So I went with making it a unique shape, the buildings all around it are sharp edges, so adding curves in and making it higher than all the other buildings should draw the eye nicely.

As for the company it belongs to, I named them after the Spire in Dublin and since is sounds like spiral I thought it was a good name for the building, I don’t have any plans for them yet, but all I know is I’m planning on having a fight in an elevator in this district, and this building is a good stop for that.

Anyway that’s it for this week, the progress list is as follows:

  • Character Concepts
    • Background extras:42/42

Season 1 Background Buildings

My second biggest milestone after the background characters

I feel this puts me overall past the half way point with the concept art. These milestones are really important to keeping motivation throughout the boring parts.

Anyway until Next time,

March 5th Update

Woo! I did it, all of the background city buildings for season 1 are done!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

This fits into more of an office/admin styled building, I’m also going to use one as the station for the city monorail, I wanted to give it a very simple prefabricated look, similar to the modular pre-fab offices I found online.

prefaboffice1

And with that the two biggest concept jobs for the current season is done, this with the background character designs where the two jobs I was the most daunted by, Next will be landmarks and the interior rooms, which I suspect will take longer than a week per room because of the level of detail each room needs, but I will post progress images when I get to them.

For now the next big done is the Landmarks which should still fit the one per week formula I’ve been following.

That being said next week I’ll be posting a full catalogue of the buildings I’ve done like what I did with the background extras since I’ll be attending Dublin comic con and won’t have time to work.

Anyway that’s it for this week, Thanks so much to the folks who have stuck with the blog through this section, the progress list is as follows:

  • Character Concepts
    • Background extras:42/42
    • Main Characters: 13/13
    • Main character re-designs: 5/5
    • Secondary Character: 14/14

February 26th Update

Only one background concept before we start getting to the interesting stuff:

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Like last week I’m sticking with the variation in colour, but where last week was getting resources out of the ground now it has to be sorted before it can be sent off to the factory district, which is what these building are for. Mana would be dumped on the longer ramp, inside it would be sorted, then grouped together and sent through to the smaller ramp into a waiting truck below.
The inspiration for these was the old coal mines of America:

I purposely kept it simpler than this image to give it a more clinical look.

Anyway that’s it for this week, keeping it short again, the progress list is as follows:

  • Character Concepts
    • Background extras:42/42
    • Main Characters: 13/13
    • Main character re-designs: 5/5

February 12th Update

Apologies for the lack of updates, personal stuff got in the way, but we are done with the entertainment district buildings!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

I wanted to add a futuristic element to these concepts so I thought about holographic signs was something that would happen, especially in the tech based Human regions.

After this I have one region left for season 1, the mining sector, every other area can use place holder buildings since we’ll only be seeing them from a distance.

Anyway that’s it for this week, keeping it short again, the progress list is as follows:

  • Character Concepts
    • Background extras:42/42
    • Main Characters: 13/13
    • Main character re-designs: 5/5

    • Exteriors:36/39

That’s all for this week,
Until next time

January 22nd Update

Second set of entertainment buildings, I’m finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel now on the building concepts:

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

I actually based these a little off of Moe’s tavern from the Simpsons, I wanted to go for a seedy bar feel while still keeping it friendly

imagev1435bf8464d9828f578a3739d3f74007a-w3uw3kw72cfteg6w7r2_ct677x380

I then used some of the colour schemes from the Store and Residential buildings to add some variety and help it keep with the city aesthetic. I am a little worried about the signs grabbing too much attention, but I can mute the colours a bit when I’m doing composition tests in 3D.

The Second thing I want to say is that there won’t be an update next week because I’ll be doing the global game jam this weekend, and a personal thing that will take up the following week.

Anyway that’s it for this week, keeping it short this week, the progress list is as follows:

  • Character Concepts
    • Background extras:42/42
    • Main Characters: 13/13
    • Main character re-designs: 5/5
    • Secondary Character: 14/14

January 16th Update

First of a new set of Buildings this week, this will take a little explanation:

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

These are the smallest Structures in the entertainment district which is a recreational area, sort of for soldiers to unwind in, and to distract from some of the shadier things the Human government do, its basically a permanent carnival, so these little stalls line the streets.

The dolls in the prize stand are a fun detail for me too:

dolls

Ok, so the left most one is The Masked Man, this one is a artistic choice, I want to give the feel that he could be watching from anywhere, or could be anyone, so I want to place his mask or an image of him in every episode, this will count for the episode the group are in the Entertainment district, he’ll be making little cameos a lot more when I move onto the interior concepts.

The Second is obviously Ruby from RWBY, I want to wear this show’s core inspiration on its sleeve so I decided to add her in as an Easter egg.

The last is a character called Zephir from the comic called Defenders of Santropia my friend freshmaiden is making I love her stuff and since her work has also been an inspiration I wanted to put in a reference to her characters in there too (I’ve also decided that her comic will be a work of fiction in Fade’s world too, so expect to see more of them)

Anyway that’s it for the analysis, here is this week’s Update list:

  • Character Concepts
    • Background extras:42/42
    • Main Characters: 13/13
    • Main character re-designs: 5/5
    • Secondary Character: 14/14

That’s all for this week,

January 8th Update

Last Dojo for this set, I’m actually sad I’m done with these, I think with this design I finally have the idea of what I wanted these building to look like:

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The addition of the curved walls will actually take a little explanation, so originally I wanted to do a larger building, based on the dorm (or Temple) of main characters of Houseki No Kuni (Or land of the lustrous):

land-of-the-lustrous-01

I really liked the idea of a slice cut building, and wanted to apply it to my previous designs, but it was a bit of a drastic change from the previous two designs, but I looked at a few different designs of Asian buildings, and caught the ideas of the corridors usually extending from main entrances:

kh2-land-of-dragons

So I came up with the idea of a Dojo with walls built onto the main building, Sliced at an angle, I’m hopefully going to add in something like a sparring ring, which should give the district a really unique look.

Anyway that’s it for the analysis, here is this week’s Update list:

  • Character Concepts
    • Background extras:42/42
    • Main Characters: 13/13
    • Main character re-designs: 5/5

December 24th Update

Merry Christmas everyone! We have a second set of Dojo’s these week:

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

I tried to adapt last week’s design into a more detailed building, but I feel its missing something the last one had, I suspect I should have given the Roof a second layer, like in the Ikenobo Dojo I referenced last week

Rokkaku-dou_Ikenobou_doujou

Other than the roof situation I’m actually pretty happy with this one, I think it’ll fit well when I’m constructing the city proper

Other than that, I’ll be taking a much needed break over the Christmas, but I will do another “Year in review” posts on new years day, I find looking back on what I’ve done and reminding myself how much I’ve actually produced to be very motivating, it can get demoralising when I still see how much I have to do, but I’m over half way with all this concept art and I’m proud that I’ve been able to keep going through out the year.

Anyway, here is this week’s Update list:

  • Character Concepts
    • Background extras:42/42
    • Main Characters: 13/13
    • Main character re-designs: 5/5
    • Secondary Character: 14/14

December 18th Update

New building concepts this week, Training dojos:

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

These are some of the smaller buildings for this area, but these are going to be some of the more complicated buildings hence why I’ve left them for my winter break.

The main inspiration for this week’s concepts that the Ikenobo Dojo in Kyoto:

Rokkaku-dou_Ikenobou_doujou

As for the colours I took some inspiration from Warframe again (I really love the design of that game)

DY0xtyKU8AAdPwq

My concept is a lot simpler than this but unfortunately this is due to my limited free time right now, I have a number of projects which is affecting how long I can spend on the show, which is frustrating to say the least, but hopefully in the next week or so I should be able to get back on track.

Anyway, here is this week’s Update list:

  • Character Concepts
    • Background extras:42/42
    • Main Characters: 13/13
    • Main character re-designs: 5/5
    • Secondary Character: 14/14
    • Secondary Character re-designs: 5/5

    • Weapon Redesigns: 4/4
  • Scene Concepts
    • Interiors: 0/24
    • Landmarks:0/15
